Low Key was founded in 2000, making it the second youngest a cappella group at JMU. The original aim behind it was to bring together a group of students who loved to sing and give them the opportunity to have fun and make music. From this very laid-back and friendly environment grew the family that is Low Key today.

Low Key practice has always been more an anticipated gathering of friends than a scheduled club meeting. Through their three two-hour practices per week, Low Key assembles sets of “Top-40″ songs from many different styles. Past songs have included: We Danced Anyway by Deana Carter, Mr. Brightside by The Killers, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield or Such Great Heights by the Postal Service.

Low Key has many performances throughout the school year in and around Virginia. This past academic year included the “A Cappella Jam for Hope” in Winston-Salem, NC, Roanoke College’s “A Cappella Carnivella”, and the Children’s Carnival in Staunton, VA. However, Low Key members recognize that they are JMU Dukes at heart. And so, Low Key makes a point of giving back to their beloved school by participating in multiple benefit shows throughout the year, including Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Breast Cancer Awareness Concert” and the Student Ambassadors’ “Operation Santa Claus”. They’ve also been known to stop in and visit members’ families, usually being convinced (through homemade cookies) to perform impromptu shows.
